See a specialist after 12 months of trying to conceive without success, or after 6 months if you are 35 or over. Come sooner if your periods are irregular or absent, if you have had two or more miscarriages, if you have a known condition such as PCOS, endometriosis or fibroids, or if you have had surgery affecting your ovaries, tubes or womb.

Your consultant takes a full history from you and, where relevant, your partner, covering cycles, previous pregnancies, surgery and general health. They examine you if needed and carry out a pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound to look at your ovaries, antral follicle count and womb. You leave with a written list of the tests you need and what each one is for. A consultation is from £300, or from £475 combined with the ultrasound scan in the same visit.

We carry out the fertility investigation, ovulation induction and the surgical treatment of conditions affecting conception. IVF and ICSI themselves are carried out at trusted partner clinics, and your consultant plans your treatment with you and supports you through it. The advantage of starting here is that the investigation is done first, so treatment is based on a proper diagnosis rather than being the default, and nothing already tested needs repeating.

Yes, through our partner clinic Fitzrovia Fertility. The assessment starts here: a full review of your history, an AMH blood test and an antral follicle count, so the decision is based on your own results rather than a general assumption about your age. The freezing and storage themselves take place at a centre licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, with your Fitzrovia consultant carrying out the procedure and supporting you throughout.

AMH, or anti-Mullerian hormone, is a blood test that gives an indication of how many eggs are left in your ovaries. It does not measure egg quality and it does not predict whether you will conceive naturally. A low result means fewer eggs are available, which can affect how you respond to fertility treatment and how much time you may have, so it is best read alongside your antral follicle count and your age, by a consultant who can explain what it means for you.

A HyCoSy is an ultrasound scan that checks whether your fallopian tubes are open. A fine catheter passes a small amount of contrast fluid through the womb while the consultant watches it travel along the tubes on the scan. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes, needs no general anaesthetic, and most women describe period-type cramping rather than sharp pain. Taking simple pain relief an hour beforehand helps.

Yes, and it matters. A male factor is involved in around half of couples who struggle to conceive. Semen analysis is arranged alongside your own tests and your consultant interprets both sets of results together, so the plan is based on both of you rather than half the picture.

Yes, all three can. PCOS commonly affects ovulation, fibroids and polyps inside the womb can prevent an embryo implanting, and endometriosis can affect the ovaries and fallopian tubes. All are treatable, and all are assessed as part of a fertility investigation here. Treatment is sequenced around your plans for a family rather than getting in the way of them.

Often not. Many UK policies exclude fertility investigation and treatment, or cover only the investigation of an underlying gynaecological condition such as fibroids or endometriosis. Check your policy wording and pre-authorisation before you book. Self-pay patients are equally welcome and every price is confirmed with you in advance.

No. You can book directly as a self-pay patient without a GP letter or referral. If your insurer requires a referral for pre-authorisation purposes, our team can help you arrange that.
