Understanding Women’s Weight Management

What is medical weight management?

Medical weight management is a structured approach to supporting people who may benefit from clinical intervention alongside lifestyle and nutritional support.

At Ovara, our approach looks beyond weight alone.

Our specialist nurses have expertise in women’s health and endometriosis, helping us understand the wider context in which weight management takes place.

Where medical treatment may be appropriate, your suitability is assessed carefully and treatment is subject to clinician/prescriber review.

Why women come to Ovara for weight management

If you are considering medical weight management, our structured assessment can help establish whether this approach is appropriate for you. You may be looking for support with:

  • Weight management that goes beyond diet and exercise alone

  • Understanding whether medical weight management is suitable for you

  • A structured approach to improving your health and wellbeing

  • Support with weight, lifestyle and nutrition

  • Regular clinical monitoring rather than simply receiving a prescription

  • A service that understands women’s health

  • Weight management alongside other women’s health considerations

  • A personalised plan based on your individual circumstances

Your first appointment is about understanding your health and determining the most appropriate next step.

What we consider

Your health, not just your weight

Weight can be influenced by many different factors, which is why we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. During your assessment, we may consider:

Your medical history

We will discuss your current and previous health conditions, medications and any relevant medical history.

Your weight and BMI

Your weight and BMI form part of the clinical assessment and help determine whether medical weight management may be appropriate.

Your lifestyle

We will discuss areas such as nutrition, physical activity and lifestyle habits as part of your wider assessment.

Women’s health

Our team has specialist expertise in women’s health and endometriosis, allowing relevant women’s health considerations to form part of your assessment.

Reproductive health

Where relevant, we will discuss reproductive health, pregnancy and plans to conceive as part of determining treatment suitability.

Your individual goals

We want to understand what you are hoping to achieve and what matters most to you.

Is medical weight management right for you?

There is no automatic route to treatment.

Your suitability will be assessed individually, taking into account your health, medical history, BMI, medications and other relevant factors.

Our clinical team will help determine whether this pathway is suitable for you.

Pregnancy. Pregnancy and trying to conceive require specific reproductive-health assessment.

Endometriosis. Having endometriosis does not, on its own, mean that weight-management treatment is appropriate, and weight-management medication is not a treatment for endometriosis.

Your weight management journey

What happens, step by step

Our programme is designed to provide support before, during and beyond the initial stages of treatment.

  1. 01

    Initial Assessment

Your journey starts with a comprehensive assessment. We will discuss your health, medical history, lifestyle, weight and BMI, medications and relevant women’s health considerations. This helps establish whether medical weight management may be appropriate for you.

  2. 02

    Clinician / Prescriber Review

Your assessment is reviewed by an appropriate clinician/prescriber.They will confirm your suitability and, where appropriate, develop an individual care plan.
  3. 03

    Treatment Education

Before treatment begins, we explain what you can expect.

We will discuss your treatment, how it is used, potential side effects, expectations and lifestyle support.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions before proceeding.

  4. 04

    Four-Weekly Reviews

During the titration phase, our nurses provide regular reviews. These appointments allow us to monitor your:

    • Progress
    • Response to treatment
    • Side effects
    • General wellbeing
    • Lifestyle and nutrition
    • Treatment requirements

Your treatment can then be reviewed and adjusted where clinically appropriate.

  5. 05

    Ongoing Monitoring

Weight management is not simply about starting treatment. As your programme progresses, we continue to monitor your progress and wellbeing, providing ongoing support as appropriate.
  6. 06

    Six-Month Review

At six months, you will have a comprehensive review of your progress. This looks at your effectiveness, health outcomes and next steps.

Your referring or treating clinician can then assess whether continuing treatment remains appropriate.

Medical weight management

Treatment as part of a wider plan

Where clinically appropriate, medical weight-management treatment may form part of your programme.

At Ovara, medication is not viewed in isolation. It sits alongside:

  • Clinical assessment
  • Nurse-led monitoring
  • Treatment education
  • Nutrition and festyle support
  • Regular review
  • Longer-term health considerations

Treatment is only provided where it is clinically appropriate and you meet the relevant eligibility criteria.

Women’s health & weight management

A wider perspective

Women’s health can be complex, and weight does not exist in isolation.

Our specialist nursing expertise in women’s health and endometriosis means we can consider your wider circumstances as part of your weight-management assessment. This may include discussions around:

  • Menstrual health
  • Endometriosis
  • Hormonal and metabolic considerations
  • Lifestyle
  • Reproductive health
  • Pregnancy and plans to conceive

Our service does not claim that weight-management medication treats endometriosis. Instead, we consider women’s health as part of a whole-person clinical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions

Who is the weight management service for?

Our service is for women considering medical weight management who would benefit from a structured, clinically supported approach.

Suitability is assessed individually and depends on your health, medical history and relevant eligibility criteria.

Do I need to have endometriosis?

No.

The service is designed around women’s health and includes specialist expertise in endometriosis, but you do not need to have endometriosis to access the service.

Does the treatment treat endometriosis?

No.

Weight-management medication is not an established treatment for endometriosis. Endometriosis alone is not an indication for treatment.

Will I automatically be prescribed medication?

No.

Your first appointment is an assessment. If medical weight management is appropriate, your suitability will be reviewed by the appropriate clinician/prescriber.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your initial consultation looks at your medical history, weight and BMI, lifestyle, medications, relevant health considerations and your individual goals.

The purpose is to understand whether the programme is appropriate for you and what the next steps should be.

How often will I be reviewed?

During the titration phase, nurse-led reviews are planned every four weeks. Ongoing monitoring and a six-month review are also built into the pathway.

Can I join if I am pregnant?

Pregnancy requires specific clinical assessment and medical weight-management treatment may not be appropriate.

Please tell the clinical team if you are pregnant or planning to conceive.

Can I receive lifestyle and nutrition support?

Yes.

Nutrition and lifestyle are considered as part of the wider weight-management approach and will be discussed throughout your programme.

What happens after six months?

At six months, your progress, treatment response and health outcomes are reviewed to determine the appropriate next steps.
