What Is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it, most commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis. Each month this tissue responds to your hormones in the same way as the womb lining, causing inflammation, pain and, over time, scar tissue.
Endometriosis affects around 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, yet many wait years for a diagnosis because their symptoms are put down to “bad periods”. Painful periods that disrupt your life are not something you simply have to put up with. A specialist assessment can give you answers.

How do I know if I have endometriosis?
The most common signs are period pain severe enough to disrupt your life, pelvic pain between periods, pain during or after sex, pain going to the toilet during your period, heavy bleeding and ongoing fatigue. Some women also struggle to conceive. Symptoms vary widely, and their severity does not always match the extent of the disease. A specialist consultation and pelvic ultrasound are the right first steps to getting answers.
Can an ultrasound scan detect endometriosis?
A specialist pelvic ultrasound can identify endometriotic cysts on the ovaries and signs of deeper disease, and it can rule out other causes of pelvic pain such as fibroids. However, a normal scan does not rule endometriosis out, as superficial disease is often invisible on imaging. Your consultant will interpret your scan alongside your symptoms and advise whether further investigation is needed.
Is a laparoscopy the only way to diagnose endometriosis?
A laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) remains the definitive way to confirm endometriosis. That said, many women can start effective treatment based on their symptoms and scan findings, without surgery. If a laparoscopy is recommended, the disease can often be treated during the same procedure, so diagnosis and treatment happen in one step.
Can endometriosis be cured?
There is currently no permanent cure for endometriosis, but it can be managed effectively. The right combination of medical treatment, surgery where appropriate and ongoing specialist care can dramatically reduce pain and protect your fertility and quality of life. Being honest about this from the start matters, and it is why long-term follow-up with a named consultant is built into our care.
Does endometriosis affect fertility?
Endometriosis can make it harder to conceive, but many women with the condition become pregnant naturally. If you are planning a family, tell your consultant at your first appointment. Your treatment will be sequenced around that goal, and fertility investigations are available in-clinic if you want a fuller picture.
Can I be treated without surgery?
Yes. Many women manage endometriosis well with hormonal treatment such as the pill, the Mirena coil or other medication, combined with effective pain management. Surgery is recommended when symptoms are not controlled, when cysts need removing, or when fertility is a factor. Your consultant will always discuss every option with you before anything is decided.

How much does a private endometriosis assessment cost?
An initial consultation with a consultant gynaecologist is £300. A consultation combined with a specialist pelvic ultrasound, which is the most comprehensive first visit option, is £475. Follow-up appointments are £260. Surgical fees are quoted individually after your consultation. All major health insurers are accepted.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly as a self-pay patient without a GP letter or referral. If your insurer requires a referral for pre-authorisation purposes, our team can help you arrange that.
