Understanding Menopause

Perimenopause and Menopause, Explained

Menopause is the point when your periods stop permanently, on average around age 51 in the UK. Perimenopause is the transition leading up to it, when hormone levels begin to fluctuate. It can start years before your final period, often in your early to mid 40s, and this is when many women first notice symptoms.

Symptoms are different for every woman, and they are frequently mistaken for stress, anxiety or simply being run down. You do not need to wait until your periods stop to get help. Effective treatment exists at every stage.

Common Symptoms

If any of the following are affecting your life, a consultant assessment can give you answers:

  • Changes to your periods, heavier, lighter or less regular
  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Poor sleep and exhaustion
  • Low mood, anxiety, irritability or brain fog
  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex
  • Low libido
  • Joint aches, headaches and bladder symptoms
★★★★★

“For the first time I felt properly heard. I left with a plan and my energy is finally coming back.”

Your Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?

Perimenopause is the transition phase before menopause, when hormone levels fluctuate and symptoms often begin, even though you are still having periods. Menopause is confirmed when you have gone 12 months without a period, which happens on average around age 51 in the UK. You do not need to wait for your periods to stop before seeking help, treatment is available and effective during perimenopause.

Do I need a blood test to diagnose menopause?

Usually not. For women over 45 with typical symptoms, perimenopause and menopause are diagnosed from your symptoms and menstrual history alone. Hormone blood tests are most useful for younger women, where symptoms are unusual, or to rule out other causes such as thyroid problems. Your consultant will only recommend tests that genuinely add clarity.

Is HRT safe?

For most women, the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks, particularly when started before 60 or within 10 years of menopause. The risks depend on your individual health history and the type of HRT used, which is exactly why a personalised assessment matters. Your consultant will go through your history and the current evidence with you, so you can make a properly informed decision.

What if I cannot take HRT, or would rather not?

There are effective alternatives. Prescribed non-hormonal medications can help with flushes, sweats and mood symptoms, and MonaLisa Touch can treat vaginal dryness and urinary symptoms without hormones. Lifestyle changes around sleep, exercise and diet also make a real difference. Your plan is built around what works for you.

What is MonaLisa Touch?

MonaLisa Touch is a gentle laser treatment that stimulates the vaginal tissue to improve dryness, discomfort and some urinary symptoms linked to menopause. It is carried out in-clinic, takes only a few minutes per session and needs no anaesthetic. It can be used alongside HRT or on its own for women who cannot or prefer not to use hormones.

I have bleeding after menopause. Should I be worried?

Any bleeding after menopause should be checked promptly. In most cases the cause is benign, but it always needs investigating to rule out anything serious. We offer rapid assessment with ultrasound, and hysteroscopy where needed, usually within days rather than weeks. Please do not put off getting it checked.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most patients are offered an appointment within 48 hours of getting in touch. No GP referral is needed. You can book directly by phone, email or by completing the form below.

How much does a private menopause consultation cost?

An initial consultation with a consultant gynaecologist is £300. A consultation combined with a pelvic ultrasound is £475. Follow-up appointments to review and adjust your treatment are £260. Blood tests are priced separately. All major health insurers are accepted.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly as a self-pay patient without a GP letter or referral. If your insurer requires a referral for pre-authorisation purposes, our team can help you arrange that.
