Understanding MonaLisa Touch
UMonaLisa Touch is a fractional CO2 laser treatment for the vaginal tissues. A slim probe delivers precise pulses of light energy to the vaginal wall, which prompts the body to lay down new collagen and improve its own blood supply and natural moisture. Nothing is cut, there are no stitches and no hormones are involved.
These symptoms are caused by falling oestrogen. As levels drop around and after the menopause, the vaginal and vulval tissues become thinner, drier and less elastic. Doctors call this the genitourinary syndrome of the menopause, or vaginal atrophy. It affects around half of women after the menopause, and most never raise it with anyone. Creams and moisturisers help the surface. MonaLisa Touch works on the tissue underneath.
If any of the following sound familiar, a consultant assessment will tell you honestly whether MonaLisa Touch is likely to help you:
MonaLisa Touch® is a fractional CO2 laser system used for the vaginal symptoms of the menopause. At Ovara Health every treatment is carried out by a consultant.
“Dr Yemi was so professional, Michelle and Junell were amazing, they made me feel relaxed as I was extremely nervous when I came in. I was happy with the overall service. I will be back.”

What It Treats
MonaLisa Touch is used for the vaginal and urinary symptoms that come with falling oestrogen. These are the reasons women are referred for it most often at our Chelsea clinic.
Most common
Thinning and drying of the vaginal tissues after the menopause, medically known as the genitourinary syndrome of the menopause. Dryness, burning, itching and a raw feeling day to day.
Intimacy
Pain, stinging or tearing during or after sex, known as dyspareunia. For many women this is the symptom that finally brings them in, and it is one of the most treatable.
Bladder
Sudden urges, going more often, or small leaks when you cough, laugh or exercise. The tissues around the urethra thin with the menopause in exactly the same way.
Recurrent problems
Urine infections and thrush that keep coming back. A drier, thinner vaginal lining changes the natural balance that normally keeps infection at bay.
When HRT is not an option
Tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors and chemotherapy can bring on menopausal symptoms suddenly and severely. Many women in this position are told to avoid hormones altogether.
Postnatal & surgical
Dryness, scar discomfort and loss of tone that started after a difficult delivery, or an early menopause brought on by removal of the ovaries.
Your Treatment
Nothing is rushed and nothing is a surprise. Your consultant explains each stage before it happens, and you can stop at any point without giving a reason.
Step one
An unhurried appointment with a consultant covering your symptoms, your history and what you want to change, with a gentle examination to confirm what is causing them.
Honest advice
Your consultant will tell you plainly whether MonaLisa Touch is likely to help, whether vaginal oestrogen or physiotherapy should come first, or whether both together make more sense.
Before the day
Eat and drink normally, no fasting and no sedation. Come with an empty bladder, avoid treatment during a period, and any infection is cleared beforehand.
The treatment
A slim probe is inserted and rotated gently while the laser delivers its pulses. Most women describe a warm buzzing rather than pain, and no anaesthetic is normally needed.
Afterwards
You walk out and carry on as normal. Avoid sex, swimming, baths and tampons for about five days. Some women notice mild spotting or discharge for a day or two.
The full course
Most women have three treatments six weeks apart, because collagen keeps rebuilding between sessions. You are reviewed afterwards, with a single top-up around once a year.
Your Options
MonaLisa Touch is one option among several, and it is not the right first step for everyone. Here is how it sits alongside the alternatives, so you can make a decision with the full picture.
First line for many
Inexpensive, available over the counter and genuinely useful for day-to-day comfort and for sex. They ease the symptoms without changing the tissue itself.
Hormonal, local
A pessary, cream or ring that puts a very small dose of oestrogen where it is needed. Effective and well established, and for most women it is the sensible first treatment to try.
Hormonal, whole body
Patches, gels or tablets that treat menopausal symptoms throughout the body. It helps many women, but vaginal dryness can persist on HRT alone and often needs treating locally too.
Muscle, not tissue
Specialist physiotherapy strengthens and coordinates the pelvic floor muscles. It is the right answer for leaking and prolapse driven by muscle weakness rather than tissue thinning.
Hormone-free
Fractional CO2 laser that stimulates the vaginal tissue to rebuild its own collagen and moisture. A course of three sessions, then a single top-up around once a year.
Most common in practice
In real life most women do best on more than one thing at once. Your consultant builds the combination around your symptoms, your medical history and what you are willing to keep up.

Most women are assessed within a couple of days and, if MonaLisa Touch is right for them, complete the full course over about three months.

Your Questions
MonaLisa Touch is a fractional CO2 laser treatment for the vaginal tissues. A slim probe delivers precise pulses of light energy to the vaginal wall, which stimulates the tissue to produce new collagen and improve its own blood supply and natural moisture. It is used for vaginal dryness, discomfort during sex and the urinary symptoms that come with the menopause. There is no surgery, no cutting and no hormones involved, and each session takes under 10 minutes.
Most women describe a warm buzzing or gentle vibration rather than pain, and no anaesthetic is normally needed. The probe is slim and similar in size to a smear test speculum. If your tissues are particularly sore, your consultant can apply a numbing gel first. You can ask for the treatment to be paused or stopped at any point, and you never have to give a reason.
Most women have a course of three treatments spaced about six weeks apart, because collagen keeps rebuilding in the weeks between sessions. Some women with milder symptoms notice enough improvement after two. After the course, a single top-up treatment around once a year is usual. You pay per session rather than for a course up front, so you can stop whenever you are happy with how you feel.
Many women notice some improvement in dryness and comfort in the weeks after the first treatment, and most of the change comes through over the course of all three. Collagen takes time to rebuild, so the effect keeps developing for a couple of months after your last session. Results do vary between women, and your consultant will be honest with you at your assessment about what is realistic in your case.
For most women the improvement from a full course lasts around a year, and is then maintained with a single top-up session. This is because the underlying cause, low oestrogen, does not go away. MonaLisa Touch improves the condition of the tissue rather than replacing the hormone, so ongoing maintenance is part of the plan rather than a sign that something has gone wrong.
This is one of the most common reasons women ask about it, because tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors and chemotherapy can bring on severe vaginal dryness while ruling out hormone treatment. MonaLisa Touch is hormone-free, which is why it is often considered in this situation. Your consultant will go through your history in detail and, where appropriate, liaise with your oncology team before confirming that treatment is suitable for you.
Yes. They work in different ways and are often used together. Vaginal oestrogen replaces the hormone locally, while MonaLisa Touch improves the structure of the tissue. Many women use both, and some are able to reduce how often they need their pessaries or cream afterwards. Never stop a prescribed treatment without speaking to your consultant first.
No. You walk out and carry on with your day, including work and driving. Avoid sex, swimming, baths and tampons for about five days, and skip heavy exercise for a couple of days. Mild spotting, a watery discharge or a slight warm feeling for a day or two afterwards is normal. Contact us if you have pain, bleeding or a discharge with an odour, which needs checking.
MonaLisa Touch is not carried out during pregnancy, during an active vaginal or urine infection, or where there is unexplained vaginal bleeding that has not yet been investigated. It is not a treatment for prolapse, and it is not the right first step for everyone with bladder leakage. This is exactly what the initial consultation is for, and if it is not the right treatment for you your consultant will tell you and suggest what is.
No. You can book directly as a self-pay patient without a GP letter or referral. If your health insurer requires a referral to cover your consultation, our reception team can help you arrange that beforehand.
At Ovara Health in Chelsea, the first MonaLisa Touch treatment is £750 and each additional treatment is £650, so a typical course of three comes to £2,050. The initial consultation is £300, or £475 combined with a pelvic ultrasound, and follow-ups are £260. You pay per session rather than for a course up front, and you will always have a written quote before anything is booked. MonaLisa Touch is normally self-pay, although your consultation may be covered by your insurance policy.
