Private scans work alongside your NHS care, they do not replace it. Many women choose to add scans between their routine NHS appointments for extra reassurance, faster access, or a more detailed look at how their baby is developing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How early can I have a pregnancy scan?
An early reassurance scan can usually detect a heartbeat from around 6 weeks of pregnancy. If you are earlier than this, or unsure of your dates, our team will advise the best time to book so the scan can give you a clear answer. Scanning too early can cause unnecessary worry, so we will always be honest about the right timing.
Do I need a GP or midwife referral?
No. You can book any of our pregnancy scans directly, without a referral. If your health insurer requires a referral for pre-authorisation, our team can help you arrange that.
How much does a private pregnancy scan cost?
A standalone pregnancy ultrasound scan is £300. A consultation combined with a scan, which is the most comprehensive option if you have symptoms or a complex history, is £475. Follow-up appointments are £260. All major health insurers are accepted.
Can I bring my partner or a family member?
Of course. Partners and family members are always welcome at every scan, and we will make sure you can both see the screen. Seeing your baby together is part of what makes these appointments special.
What happens if the scan finds a problem?
Your consultant will explain exactly what has been found, what it means and what happens next, face to face on the day. Because Ovara Health is a full women’s health clinic, any follow-up consultations, repeat scans or onward referrals are arranged straight away. We will also share findings with your NHS team with your consent, so your care stays joined up.
Will a private scan affect my NHS care?
No. Private scans sit alongside your NHS pregnancy care and do not replace your routine NHS appointments. You will receive a written report from every scan which you can share with your midwife or NHS hospital team.
What is NIPT and when can I have it?
NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing) is a blood test available from 10 weeks of pregnancy. It analyses fragments of your baby’s DNA in your blood to screen for Down’s syndrome and other chromosomal conditions. It is a screening test rather than a diagnostic test, and your consultant will talk you through what your result means and any next steps.
Do I get pictures of my baby?
Yes. You will be given scan images to take home from your appointment, alongside your written report.

We work with all major UK private health insurers including Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Vitality, WPA and Cigna. Please bring your membership details and any pre-authorisation number when you attend. You can also self pay, with prices published on this page.
