What Are Uterine Fibroids?
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. Around one in two women will develop fibroids by the age of 50, though many will never experience symptoms. When fibroids do cause problems, the impact on quality of life can be significant.
Fibroids are oestrogen-dependent, which means they tend to shrink naturally after the menopause. They are more prevalent in women of Afro-Caribbean heritage. Treatment is available for every stage and symptom profile.

Fibroid Types
The Three Main Types of Fibroid
Where a fibroid grows determines the symptoms it causes and which treatment will work best. Your consultant will identify the type and location at your assessment.
Inside the uterine cavity
Submucous Fibroids
Grow inwards into the uterine cavity and are the type most likely to cause heavy bleeding and fertility problems.
- Most common cause of very heavy periods
- Strongly linked to difficulty conceiving
- Often treated with hysteroscopic surgery as a day case
Within the uterine wall
Intramural Fibroids
Grow within the muscular wall of the uterus and are the most common type. Can cause heavy periods, pelvic pain and pressure symptoms.
- Most frequently diagnosed fibroid type
- Can enlarge the uterus significantly
- Treated with laparoscopic myomectomy or UAE
Outside the uterus
Subserous Fibroids
Grow outwards from the outer surface of the uterus and are more likely to cause pressure on the bladder or bowel.

Non-invasive
Watchful Waiting
If fibroids are small and not causing significant symptoms, a monitoring approach is often the right first step. Regular ultrasound checks track any change in size.

Medical management
Hormonal Treatment
Medications including GnRH analogues and progesterone-based treatments can reduce fibroid size and control heavy bleeding, often used before surgery to improve outcomes.

Day case, no incisions
Hysteroscopic Myomectomy
For submucous fibroids inside the uterine cavity, this minimally invasive procedure removes fibroids through the cervix with no cuts and a rapid recovery.

Fertility-preserving surgery
Laparoscopic Myomectomy
Keyhole surgery to remove intramural and subserous fibroids while keeping the uterus intact. The preferred surgical route for women who wish to preserve their fertility.

Non-surgical
Uterine Artery Embolisation
A radiological procedure that cuts off the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink. An effective, non-surgical alternative to myomectomy for suitable patients.

Endometrial Ablation
Treats the heavy bleeding caused by fibroids by removing the lining of the womb. Suitable for women who do not wish to have further pregnancies.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have fibroids?
The most common signs are heavy or prolonged periods, pelvic pain or pressure, bloating and a frequent need to urinate. Some women also notice pain during sex or difficulty conceiving. Many women with fibroids have no symptoms at all and are only diagnosed at a routine scan. A consultation and pelvic ultrasound at Ovara Health will confirm whether fibroids are present and give you a clear picture of their size and location.
Do fibroids always need treatment?
Many fibroids do not require treatment, particularly if they are small and not causing symptoms that affect your daily life. Your consultant will review your individual situation and only recommend intervention when the clinical evidence supports it. Watchful waiting with regular ultrasound monitoring is a completely valid management path for many women.
Can fibroids affect my ability to get pregnant?
Most women with fibroids conceive naturally and go on to have completely healthy pregnancies without any intervention. Fibroids that grow inside the uterine cavity (submucous fibroids) are most likely to interfere with implantation or early pregnancy. If fertility is a concern, your consultant will assess whether any fibroids are in a position that warrants treatment before you try to conceive.
What is the difference between a myomectomy and a hysterectomy?
A myomectomy removes the fibroids while leaving the uterus in place, and is the preferred surgical option for any woman who wants to preserve her fertility or simply does not want her uterus removed. A hysterectomy removes the uterus entirely and is the only permanent solution, but it is only recommended in specific circumstances. Your consultant will always explore all other options first.

How much does a private fibroid assessment cost?
An initial consultation with a consultant gynaecologist is £300. A consultation combined with a diagnostic pelvic ultrasound scan, which is the most comprehensive first visit option, is £475. Follow-up appointments are £260. All major health insurers are accepted.
Will fibroids come back after treatment?
This depends on the type of treatment. A hysterectomy is the only permanent solution. After a myomectomy or uterine artery embolisation there is a small chance of new fibroids developing over time, as the procedure does not change the underlying hormonal environment that allowed fibroids to grow. Your consultant will advise on the likelihood of recurrence based on your individual situation.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly as a self-pay patient without a GP letter or referral. If your insurer requires a referral for pre-authorisation purposes, our team can help you arrange that.
