Colposcopy – A Closer Look at Your Cervical Health

A colposcopy is a simple outpatient procedure used to examine the cervix in greater detail when a smear test has detected abnormal cells or if there are other concerns such as unexplained bleeding. At Ovara Health, our specialist team provides expert colposcopy services in a comfortable and supportive environment, ensuring you receive the best care for your cervical health.

Why Might You Need a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy may be recommended if:

  • Your smear test has shown abnormal changes (dyskaryosis)
  • You have had repeated abnormal smear results
  • There are signs of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection
  • You experience unexplained bleeding after intercourse or between periods
  • Your cervix appears inflamed or irregular during a routine examination

What to Expect During the Procedure

A colposcopy is very similar to a smear test. During the procedure:

  • A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina, just like during a smear test
  • The cervix is examined using a colposcope, a specialised magnifying instrument
  • A mild solution (acetic acid or iodine) is applied to highlight any abnormal areas
  • If necessary, a small tissue sample (biopsy) may be taken for further analysis

The procedure takes around 10-15 minutes, and while some women may experience mild discomfort, it is generally not painful. You will be able to resume normal activities shortly afterwards.

Understanding Your Results

After a colposcopy, the results will help determine whether further monitoring or treatment is needed:

  • Normal findings – No abnormal cells detected, and routine screening can continue
  • Low-grade changes – Minor cell changes that may resolve on their own
  • High-grade changes – Treatment may be recommended to remove abnormal cells and prevent progression

If treatment is required, the most common option is LLETZ (Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone), a straightforward procedure to remove abnormal cells.
