FAQs

What does a gynaecologist help with?

A gynaecologist can diagnose and treat conditions of the female reproductive system — womb, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, vagina. This includes heavy, irregular or painful periods; fertility issues; menopause; pelvic pain; abnormal bleeding; ovarian cysts; endometriosis and other hormonal or structural issues.

Is this symptom normal, or should I see a specialist?

If you experience persistent or worsening symptoms — changes in bleeding (heavier, lighter, irregular), severe pain, unusual discharge, spotting between periods, bleeding after sex, or symptoms that interfere with daily life — it’s worth consulting a GP or gynaecologist.

When should I have a smear test (cervical screening), and what happens if it’s abnormal?

In the UK, cervical screening is routinely offered every 3 years for those aged 25-49, and every 5 years for 50-64. If your screening shows abnormal cells or high-risk HPV, further tests (colposcopy, biopsy) may be required to check for treatable changes.

What contraceptive options are safe for me?

Many options are available — hormonal (pills, implants, patches, injections), intrauterine devices (IUDs), barrier methods, non-hormonal alternatives. The best choice depends on your overall health, future pregnancy plans, side effects, personal preferences. Discuss with your gynaecologist or GP.

Has menopause begun? What symptoms should I look out for and how is it managed?

Menopause typically occurs around age 51, but symptoms (perimenopause) can start earlier. Look out for hot flushes, night sweats, irregular periods, mood changes, vaginal dryness, sleep problems. Management can include lifestyle measures, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), non-hormonal treatments.

Will endometriosis or fibroids come back after treatment?

Possibly. Recurrence depends on how completely the condition was removed or treated, the severity, and ongoing medical/surgical follow-up. Some patients will need further treatment, others manage symptoms with hormonal therapy or lifestyle changes.

What should I do if I’ve had spotting or bleeding in early pregnancy?

Contact your GP or midwife promptly. While spotting is common and doesn’t always mean something is wrong, bleeding in early pregnancy can signal issues like miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, so it should be assessed.
